N2 - Output power is one of the basic concerns in high-frequency oscillator design. Evaluation of the output power of an oscillator circuit often requires the knowledge of a non-linear model or a set of large-signal parameters for the transistor used. However, non-linear transistor parameters or large-signal models are often difficult to obtain and are not readily available. In this paper, formulas relating the relative output power to the transistor small-signal s parameters and the circuit configuration external to the transistor are derived, from which relative power comparison between circuit designs using the same transistor can be made. Circuits for maximum output power can also be synthesised by optimising the relative power equations. Absolute output power can also be predicted using the relative power formulas provided the circuit consititutes a linear oscillator design where the oscillation start-up perturbation is small. © 1991 Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.
