Abstract

Bioorganometallic chemistry is a multidisciplinary field that focuses on the biological properties of metal complexes with at least one metal-carbon bond. More recently, organometallic compounds have emerged as promising alternative chemotherapeutics. In particular, organometallic Ru and Os complexes have shown potent anticancer activity in vitro and in vivo. They exhibit modes of action that are different from clinical platinum drugs. In addition to DNA targeting, Ru and Os organometallic compounds exert their antitumor-effects through redox activation or targeting proteins and enzymes. This article highlights the leading classes of bioactive organometallics compounds based on Ru and Os metal centers. © 2022 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
