Abstract
Graphene possesses many excellent optical properties and can be integrated with various photonic devices to achieve new functions. Three optical models of graphene appear in the literature: the isotropic model, the anisotropic model, and the interface model. In the isotropic/anisotropic model, graphene is treated as a thin film with a finite thickness that has an isotropic/anisotropic relative permittivity, whereas in the interface model, graphene is treated as a conductive boundary with no thickness. This talk presents a comparison of these models for the analysis of graphene-attached waveguide structures and an introduction of some graphene-incorporated waveguide devices developed at City University of Hong Kong, which include spatial mode filters, electro-optic mode converters, thermo-optic mode switches, and all-optical switches.
