Abstract

The mean square penetration depth (MSPD) in grain boundary diffusion was analyzed. For a semi-infinite system with constant source concentration (the Fisher-Whipple formulation), the value of MSPD can be obtained using the approximate expression Y2 = 0.9 D′δ/D1/2 t1/2 = 1.35βx2, 104 where D′ and D are respectively the grain boundary and lattice diffusion coefficients, δ is the boundary width, t is diffusion time, β = (D′/D)δ/(2√Dt), and x2 = (4/3)Dt is the corresponding MSPD in lattice diffusion.
