Abstract
The concept of a PBG cell is introduced in this letter, and a novel one-dimension (1-D) microstrip photonic bandgap (PBG) cell structure is proposed. It is a section of a microstrip with a special perforation pattern on the microstrip line itself. By controlling the pattern and size of the perforation and the length of the section, this cell exhibits different slow-wave and bandstop characteristics at different frequencies. A series of these cells appears as a bandstop filter, while it still can be used as a slow-wave transmission line outside the stopband.
