Nonlinear meta-devices for high-dimensional optical applications

Research output: Journal Publications and Reviews › RGC 21 - Publication in refereed journal › peer-review

Abstract

Advances in information technology necessitate high-dimensional control of optical fields. Nonlinear meta-devices present a potential pathway to surpass the conventional trade-offs among efficiency, manipulation freedom, and integration. Through the synergy of resonant meta-atoms for efficient nonlinear generation and diverse modulation techniques, they hold promise for enabling on-chip multidimensional optical processing with good performance. This perspective reviews the development of nonlinear meta-devices, from meta-atom design to enhance nonlinear efficiency, to metasurface-level modulation techniques for achieving higher-dimensional functionality, and then to higher-dimensional quantum light sources based on the combination of meta-lens arrays and nonlinear optical media. Finally, we envision strategies for further expanding the functionality and applications of nonlinear meta-devices. © 2026 Author(s).
