Abstract

A nonlinear backward matrix method was proposed for the analysis of nonlinear Bragg gratings. Optical switching and bistability were observed for some specific nonlinear Bragg gratings. This method was capable of handling an arbitrary refractive-index distribution and an arbitrary form of nonlinearity, and provided a solution for a wide range of nonlinear problems.
