Abstract
Monte Carlo simulations were used to study the effects of a physisorbed film on the force of static friction in a monoatomic adsorbate confined between plane-parallel walls. The competition between the adsorbate-wall interactions and wall-wall interactions results in a nonlinear friction curve. The proximal probe and computer experiments, carried out at high coverages, describe the linear portion of the friction curve.
