Abstract

In this study, the nonlinear anti-symmetrical response of a symmetrical curved beam under small symmetrical excitation is discussed and investigated. The nonlinear differential equation of curved beam vibration is solved using a numerical integration method. The mechanism how anti-symmetric responses are induced in a symmetrical curved structure under symmetric excitation is described. Besides, an important observation brought out in the numerical results is that unlike other large amplitude nonlinear beam/plate phenomena, the nonlinear modal coupling between the symmetrical and anti-symmetrical modes can exist even though the excitation and vibration amplitude are small.
