Abstract
This paper provides a brief review of the recent progress in research and development of Ni3Al and its alloys. Emphasis has been placed on understanding low ductility and brittle fracture of Ni3Al alloys at ambient and elevated temperatures. Recent studies have resulted in identifying both intrinsic and extrinsic factors governing the fracture behavior of Ni3Al alloys. Parallel efforts on alloy design using physical metallurgy principles have led to the development of Ni3Al alloys with improved mechanical properties for structural use. Industrial interest in these alloys is high, and examples of industrial involvement in processing and utilization of these alloys are briefly mentioned.
