Abstract
Neoliberalism as a set of economic principles guiding industrial restructuration has been observed across the world since 1990s, during which the structural transformations of media industry and market-driven journalism emerged simultaneously. Through participative observation in Apple Daily Hong Kong and Apple Daily Tai Wan, two leading popular newspapers affiliated with Next Media Group in two comparable societies in Asia which successively joined WTO in 1995 and 2002, and in-depth interview with 25 media professionals scattered along the corporate hierarchy in the two newspaper market, this paper takes a comparative perspective to trace the trajectory of Hong Kong and Tai Wan newspaper industry since the launch of Apple Daily, to capture the patterns in the changes of media structure, organizational setting and routines practices occurred within the two newspaper industries in the global wave of neoliberalism since 1990s.
