Abstract

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have been proposed for a multitude of location-dependent applications. To stamp the collected data and facilitate communication protocols, it is necessary to identify the location of each sensor. In this paper, we discuss the performance of a novel received signal strength indicator (RSSI) positioning scheme, which uses a generalized geometrical location algorithm to achieve an accurate estimation based on mean received signal strength measurements. In order to improve the network performance and address limitations of static WSNs position estimation, mobile sensors are utilized effectively and an attractive movement strategy with mobile elements is designed. The effectiveness of our approach is validated and compared with the traditional RSSI method by extensive simulations. © 2008 IEEE.
