Misinformation Dissemination and Correction in Small Online Groups: The Role of Social Distance and Group Dynamics

This study investigates how misinformation spreads and is corrected within small, informal online groups, with a focus on the role of social distance, group dynamics, and interpersonal relationships. Drawing on social distance theory of power and social exchange theory, a mixed-methods approach was employed. The research involved non-participant observation, sociometric analysis, and semi-structured interviews. The findings highlight how social distance influences misinformation dissemination, with disseminators feeling more distant from the group and less influenced by social norms, while participants and debunkers are more integrated and motivated by group cohesion and empathy.
