Microwave communication system designs using hierarchical genetic algorithm

Abstract

A new methodology for designing Microwave Local Area Networks (MLAN) is proposed in this paper. It is based on a Hierarchical Genetic Algorithm (HGA) formulation, which has the capability of handling multiobjective functions and discrete constraints. In general, minimizing the path losses between the terminals and the base-stations will optimize the MLAN performance. An accurate prediction of the path losses with the use of minimum power would reduce the co-channel interference and allow frequency re-use. It has been found from this study that HGA is ideally suited for MLAN design, since it not only satisfies the optimization of the skewed multiobjective functions and constraints, but also identifies the required number of minimum base-stations. This added feature provides a design trade-off between cost and performance without extra efforts. An example of using HGA for a MLAN is also presented.
