Abstract

Previous investigations of some Mg-Sn-Ca alloys indicated good corrosion and good creep resistance. This study attempts to extend the range of such alloys by including two new alloys, namely, Mg2Sn2Ca and Mg4Sn2Ca (wt %), in their as-cast form. The alloys were cast in metal molds of 100 mm diameter and 350 mm length. The resulting microstructures have been studied using optical light microscopy (LM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) facility. The corrosion behavior of these alloys has been investigated by means of salt spray tests and potentio-dynamic measurements. Also, creep deformation of these alloys was measured at a temperature of 175°C under an applied compressive stress of 80 MPa. The results of this study are compared with those obtained from Mg3Sn2Ca as well as AE42 and AZ91.
