Abstract
The microstructures of extruded and hot-rolled 2124 Al-15% (by weight) SiC whisker composites have been examined. The whiskers in the extrudate were preferentially aligned along the extrusion direction. This preferred orientation resulted in anisotropic mechanical properties. Hot rolling (85% reduction in thickness) along the original extrusion direction caused some damage of the whiskers but they still retained their original orientation. In contrast, hot rolling perpendicular to the extrusion direction tended to rotate the whiskers and, consequently, produced a nearly isotropic material. Whisker-free zones, which were frequently found in the as-extruded material, were virtually eliminated or greatly reduced in size by hot rolling. In situ Auger fractography of the composite was also carried out, and results are reported.
