Abstract

Since the ‘Reform and Opening-Up’ policy was introduced in 1978,
cities in China have experienced rapid urbanization, together with a sharp growth
in their economies and urban populations. The past two decades sawan increase of new districts in many provincial cities. Notably, grand theaters, often set as iconic cultural buildings in the central area of a new city, were built in an accelerated fashion, aimed at rapidly promoting a sense of cultural identity. The top-down decision process of governments has brought cultural conflicts and changes to the urban fabric of such areas at a time when growing numbers of star overseas architects and design firms are invited to participate in international bidding processes for designing such theaters, andwin prizes for their designs. In this article, the construction process of Zhengdong New District and Henan Art Center are reviewed as a typical example of this phenomenon. The dilemma that Zhengzhou confronted is examined to reconsider the effects of the development of the Zhengdong New District, and the historical and theoretical contributions of this development to the contemporary modernization process.
