Abstract

Currently, guiding students to reach the learning goals through media- on-demand approach in a collaborative learning environment is quite primitive in most cyber-courseware systems on the Internet. In particular, these systems do not have powerful multimedia retrieval features for responding student enquiries based on individual student’s background and interests. In this paper, we present the architecture and facilities of providing Media-on-demand for an Agent-based Tutoring system (MATs). The facilities and capabilities of user profiles, schema, and SMIL are incorporated and utilized by MATs so as to provide a better support to the interactive learning environment in which student- specific, content-based learning styles can be adequately entertained. A prototype system of MATs manifesting these algorithms has been built in Java, SMIL, using IE and RealOne on the PC platform. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2002
