Abstract

An estimator that is based on maximum likelihood approach for joint detection and synchronization is presented. The structure consists of a fractionally spaced feedforward filter for equalizing the channel distortion, a demodulator and a maximum likelihood estimator incorporated with decision feedback for determining the demodulator's phase angle and the transmitted symbols. Different tracking algorithms at the symbol rate are discussed and their performances are compared by computer simulations.
