Abstract

In stop motion and photography-based animation, meaning is anchored within the everyday, while digital animation, by default, is set within a virtual space removed from the real world. Within abstract animation, how do digital and analogue materials impact the viewer's reading of a moving image work? How does the function of representation and symbolism differ, depending on whether the work is set within an analogue or a digital space? An analysis of the author's abstract films will lead to the proposition of some answers to these questions, and offer suggestions on how they can be leveraged as creative filmmaking techniques.
