Abstract
This study aims to provide a preliminary analysis and classification of Mandarin Physical Contact (MPC) verbs, such as 打/敲/拍/擊 ‘hit/ knock/ pat/ strike’, 擦/拭 ‘wipe’, 握/抓 ‘hold’, under the lexical-constructional approach. The conceptual schema of physical contact with salient semantic components is proposed as the base for various lexicalized profiles in different semantic frames. Constructional patterns and features were also identified as morpho-syntactic criteria for distinguishing semantic frames of MPC verbs. Based on semantic-to-syntactic evidences, MPC verbs are distinguished into three primary frames: verbs of Contact by Impact (CI verbs), verbs of Contact by Surface Motion (CS verbs) and verbs of Contact by Holding (CH verbs).
