Abstract
Drawing on an integrated approach utilizing both social network theory and the institution-based perspective, this study explores how managerial networks in China affect firm performance via an intervening process of organizational innovation. Specifically, we differentiate between two types of managerial networks (business versus institutional networks) in China, and investigate how these two networks may distinctively affect firm innovation (exploration versus exploitation) and further drive firm performance. Survey data from two industries in China suggest that a firm’s business network is more related to exploratory innovation, while its institutional network is more related to exploitative innovation. Firm innovation also mediates the relationship between managerial networks and firm performance.
