Abstract

This presentation will cover the development of gas and PM sensor and current progress in sensor network establishment in Hong Kong. A scanning spectroscopic sensor in near infrared range has been applied to detect atmosphere CO2 concentrations at high precision. The sensor is modulated with real-time data display and 8 outdoor monitoring locations are being established in Hong Kong to communicate greenhouse gas among high school students. The infrared sensor chip and its algorithm could be developed to detect other pollutants (e.g., methane). The CO2 data will feed into regional models for carbon sources and sinks research and a larger network is planned in the future. In addition, a PM sensor has been developed that measures by light scattering and has proven performance against higher cost PM instruments. Potential application is saturation monitoring of PM in urban area.
