Abstract
In hierarchical overlaying cellular phone systems, traffic overflow between the overlaying tiers is used to improve the utilization of capacity. The arrival process of overflow traffic has been verified to be correlated and bursty. This characteristic has brought great challenge to performance evaluation in hierarchical networks. The discussions in most existing work focus on tra±c loss analysis in homogenous hierarchical networks, e.g. micro/macro cellular phone systems. In this paper, we address the problems of performance evaluation in more complicated scenarios by taking into account heterogeneity and user mobility in hierarchical networks, and present an approximated analytical loss model. The obtained loss performance by our approximated analytical model is validated by simulation in a heterogeneousmulti-tier overlaying system. Copyright 2008 ACM.
