Abstract

Localization and tracking have played an important role in many telecommunications systems such as cellular systems, guidance systems in military applications, disaster rescue and recovery, and commodity tracking. They are also indispensable for implementing emergency response systems mandated by the FCC and location services over popular cellular systems we enjoy in our daily life. Although GPS systems have enabled some functionality in localization, tracking, and navigation, the localization accuracy may not be enough for many applications under certain scenarios such as indoors, underground, and underwater. Tremendous progress has been made in the last few years to improve localization accuracy by using various kinds of technologies. This timely special issue offers us updates along this direction. © 2011 IEEE.
