Abstract

Hong Kong, as an international cosmopolitan, is rich in language and cultural elements. Its publicly displayed textual signs contribute to a novel cityscape --- the Linguistic Landscape. Our project guided students to step outside a classroom in search of linguistic and social characteristics. Their goal was to capture evidence of unique linguistic landscapes in various places. Through field trips and collaboration with peers, our students were engaged in self-initiated inquiry of information and post-task reading. This innovative approach to collaboratively constructing the linguistic cityscape proved effective in fostering students’ discovery and appreciation of heritage and diversity in our communities.
