Abstract

The principle of effective single-mode operation with segmented cladding fibers was established by calculating the leakage losses of two different large-core segmented cladding fiber designs. The fibers were analyzed with the radial effective-index method in combination with the transverse matrix method. Effective single mode operation from 1000 to 1700 nm was demonstrated using a core diameter of 20 μm. The results show that the segmented cladding fibers can be used in dense wavelength division multiplexing, fiber amplifiers and lasers.
