Abstract
Lanthanide-doped nanoparticles have been developed as a new class of luminescent nanomaterials. In contrast to conventional bulk phosphors, nanoparticles provide a convenient platform for regulation of optical emission and for integration with other functional groups like biological molecules. Therefore, they have generated considerable research interests in fundamental sciences and shown promising prospects in biotechnology, information technology, and energy and environment. In this chapter, we seek to provide a general introduction to lanthanide-doped nanoparticle that covers the physical fundamental, chemical synthesis and modification, as well as emerging applications in diverse areas, such as biology detection and therapy, solar energy conversion, and three-dimensional displays. © 2014 Elsevier Ltd.
