Abstract

This paper explores the metafunctional basis shared by language and multimodal systems mainly at the level of cluster, i.e. the basic unit of multimodal text carrying out specific functions, especially in how clusters realize the functions of language which have evolved to meet human needs, including representation, interaction, and composition. This paper will illustrate how a multimodal text can be deconstructed into clusters and recontextualized to interact with the social-cultural context. Various multimodal texts such as paintings, photography, music, advertisement, and films as viewed from within a systemic functional perspective, are used to illustrate the similarities and differences among different modes.
