Abstract

Investigation of the laminar-turbulent transition process in the presence of distributed surface roughness in plane Poiseuille flow has been carried out. Roughness effects have been simulated using fixed wall suction/blowing. The simulated roughness was able to induce transition even in cases that are known to be completely stable when the walls are smooth. Results demonstrate that the transition process is dominated by a linear instability of the new roughness-modified flow.
