Abstract

This paper examines the behaviors of knowledge seekers and contributors to an internalKnowledge Management System (KMS) within a multinational organization. The KMSincludes two recommendation mechanisms, based on semantic algorithms and userratings. The first mechanism utilizes an algorithm to ‘measure’ the quality of knowledgecontributions and ranks them accordingly, while the second averages the ratings knowledgeitems attract from KMS users. Building on appraisal theory, we find that knowledge seekersand contributors react differently to the two recommendation mechanisms. The rating-basedrankings positively influenced knowledge seekers’ tendency to access, comment on, andspread the knowledge shared in the KMS, while the algorithm-based ranking positivelyinfluenced knowledge contributors’ to continue sharing knowledge via the system. Moreover, shorter (longer) time spans between when knowledge was shared and when knowledgecontributors received their first comments seemed to positively (negatively) influence theirtendency to continue sharing knowledge via the KMS. This novel study adds to the existingKMS literature by investigating knowledge seekers’ and contributors’ actual reactionsto the two different knowledge recommendation mechanisms, and our findings informorganizations about the importance of implementing algorithm-based rankings in their KMSas well as the simpler and more commonly adopted rating-based ranking.
