Abstract

Kinematograph is an artistic research project that raises fundamental questions about computational and algorithmic art. Instead of approaching information technologies as mere tools, this project regards them as conceptual structures that can be critically examined as such. The essential methodology is to rethink a well-established algorithm, the Huffman compression scheme, which is not customarily considered as an artistic medium. The Huffman algorithm is normally used as an efficient tool for lossless data compression. Rather than treating it in the standard way, however, the Kinematograph examines this technique’s potential as the basis for an aesthetics of dispersal and defamiliarization.
