Abstract

As you swipe across your smartphone screen, have you ever considered what lies behind the image and where it came from? All smartphones contain tin, the mineral expected to be impacted most by technology, and a third of its world supply comes from Bangka Island, Indonesia. Rizaldi’s playful essay cuts to the core of neo-colonial labor, quelling the myth of immateriality in the digital age.
