Abstract

Despite the rosy future of Mobile Health (mHealth) blueprints, its adoption from the patients has not yet taken off. One primary concern of the patients is whether mHealth can provide full coverage of the consultation experience. Our study reveals that introducing the e-prescription which legitimizes online prescriptions, could unleash mHealth’s potential in online consultations. Based on a natural experiment in two leading platforms in China, we employ a difference-in-difference-in-differences framework and show that launching e-prescription boosts patients’ demand, especially for well-established physicians and for more reputable hospitals.
