Water Memories: Large-scale public art project for new MTR station

Abstract

A large scale public art project titled "Water Memories" has been commissioned by the MTRC for the new Exhibition Station in the Wan Chai waterfront, to be completed by 2019. The project contains about 950 original photos in mostly 54x224cm glass panels, covering the north side of the paid concourse area and the two levels of platforms. The design of the project will be completed by winter 2015.Concept Water memory is the proposed ability of water to retain a memory of substances previously dissolved even after an arbitrary number of serial dilutions. –Jacques Benvenistes, French scientist, 1988 A poetic interpretation: If water had memory, what it would remember? Water Remembers Time: Seascapes inside the station At different times the water is always on the north of the land.Indeed the station is built on where once was sea.To celebrate “the water remembers the time”, a photo series of around 900 unique images will be made to record the seascape right in front of the future station at different times. All images are unique. These hundreds of photos will function as a conceptual time capsule as each image records a split-second, while serving as a full-length mosaic formed by the colours reflected by the sea at different shootings. All photographic prints will be sandwich-mounted on glass panels.
