N2 - This review aimed to introduce about mechanism of itaconic acid hydrogels for removal of metal ions and dyes from wastewater. Industrial discharge consists of toxic carcinogenic pollutants in dye effluents, and so far, conventional treatment techniques used for the treatment of harmful contaminants present in the industrial effluent are not adequate for complete elimination of pollutants. Therefore, developing and using significant cost-efficient control measures and treatment processes to safeguard the ecosystem and natural resources is the need of research. In this regard, a recent trend in the development of hydrogels that function as an excellent adsorbent in the removal of organic pollutants in dye industrial effluents has attracted researchers' attention. This is due to simplicity and high adsorptive nature of the hydrogels compared with other existing conventional adsorbents. This review has been organized to address itaconic acid–based hydrogels as a practical solution in treatment of industrial dye effluents, and it further highlights the preparation, performance, and future perspectives of using this technique in dye removal. Thus, itaconic acid–based hydrogels could be used as an efficient sorbent for eco-friendly environmental applications. © 2019 Elsevier B.V.
