Abstract

Iontophoresis is a technique used to enhance the transdermal delivery of compounds through the skin via the application of a small electric current. Interest in this field of research has led to the successful delivery of both low and high molecular drugs, such as peptides. The rapid progress in the field of microelectronics and nanotechnology is leading the way to more sophisticated iontophoretic devices, allowing improved designs with better control of drug delivery. This chapter presents an overview of the use of iontophoresis alone and in conjunction with other approaches such as chemical enhancement, use of microneedles, and nanoparticles to further increase transdermal drug permeation and decrease possible side effects. © 2020 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co.
