Abstract

Since the launch of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) in 2013, criticisms of Chinese investment in BRI projects have abounded. Hong Kong is expected to play a role in assisting Chinese enterprises in their ‘go global’ projects among Belt and Road countries. This chapter provides a sketch of the historical role of Hong Kong in the development of mainland China, and explains the research methodology used to explore the expectations of the role of Hong Kong in the BRI, particularly for the professional services sectors, given its unique institutions and talent pools. This chapter also provides an outline of the individual chapters in the book, which comprises two parts. Part A, with five chapters, discusses the defining features of the BRI, the evolving and shifting expectations of the role of Hong Kong in the BRI from the perspectives of policy-makers and the professional sectors of accountancy, finance, and law. Part B contemplates the potential opportunities for Hong Kong from the perspectives of BRI projects in four countries: Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Myanmar. © 2023 selection and editorial matter, Linda Chelan Li and Phyllis Lai Lan Mo; individual chapters, the contributors.
