Abstract

The organization of various chapters covered in this book is outlined. In the first part of the book, several adolescent developmental issues (including substance abuse, sexual behavior, exposure to pornographic materials, self-harm, and Internet addiction) are discussed with respect to different theoretical explanations, related phenomena in Hong Kong and other countries, and protective factors as well as related effective prevention programs. In the second part of the book, the teaching units developed in the Project P.A.T.H.S. with reference to these developmental issues are presented and the evaluation findings in the previous studies are discussed. In the third part of the book, several chapters based on four waves of longitudinal data collected for the Project P.A.T.H.S. are presented. Throughout the book, it is argued that positive youth development attributes can promote student well-being, and it is important to nurture positive youth development attributes in young people to protect them from engaging in risk behavior. © 2015, Springer Science+Business Media Singapore.
