Abstract

A graphics system based on the Graphical Kernel System (GKS) standard with the extension to include Chinese text has been designed and implemented. The system aims at producing high quality graphics for low cost workstation. In particular, the manipulation of Chinese text in a standard graphics environment is a substantial contribution to the graphics applications in the Far East. The system consists of a basic graphics system conformed to the ISO GKS standard, a stroker system for Chinese text and a user command interface. This paper gives description to each of these components. The basic graphics system is developed on a micro-computer based platform, emphasis will be on the description of extension of the GKS text capabilities. The stroker system consists of a set of tools which enables the porting of bit-mapped Chinese fonts to a graphics representation. The user command interface is an application layer built on the basic graphics system designed for Chinese text manipulation.
