Abstract

In the past decade, two-dimensional (2D) transition metal carbides and/or nitrides (MXenes) have drawn considerable attention because of their intriguing electronic and structural properties, as well as the associated versatile applications in various aspects. This review summarizes the current understanding of the electronic and magnetic properties of MXenes from the perspectives of chemical compositions and structural configurations. Particular emphasis has been put on the potential band-structure modifications and electronic applications of MXenes. As an important member of post-graphene 2D materials, MXenes are still under-explored presently. Nevertheless, the rich electronic and magnetic properties discovered in MXenes are expected to shed light on their promising applications in different fields.
