Abstract

Scientists have been able to trap and move biological cells by using optical tweezers through the momentum of a focused laser beam. However, in conventional direct cell manipulation involving optical tweezers, cells must be exposed to the photon flux and consequently become damaged during the process. The indirect optical manipulation of cells has attracted many concerns, but the manipulation of filamentous cells remains poorly addressed. In this study, we propose an approach for the indiret optical transportation of filamentous cells. A microtool is designed and fabricated through two-photon polymerization. Filamentous cells are then transported by cooperatively manipulating two microtools with multiple optical traps. Experiments are performed on filamentous cyanobacterial cells to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.
