Abstract

Max Hattler is a German artist working primarily with abstract animation, video installation and audiovisual performance. His work explores relationships between abstraction and figuration, aesthetics and politics, sound and image, and precision and improvisation. He holds a BA in Media and Communications from Goldsmiths, an MA in Animation from the Royal College of Art, and a Doctorate in Fine Art from the University of East London. His films have been presented around the world, including at Ars Electronica Festival, Sónar Hong Kong, MoCA Taipei, Museum of Contemporary Art Zagreb and Zhou B Art Center Chicago. Awards include Third Culture Film Festival, Bradford Animation Festival, and several Visual Music Awards. He has performed live around the world, including at Seoul Museum of Art, EXPO Milano, Clockenflap Hong Kong and Punto y Raya Festival. Max is an Assistant Professor at the School of Creative Media at City University of Hong Kong. The influence of the Chinese metropolis is reflected in his recent work – “Serial Parallels” and “Matter and Motion”: In addition to the city serving as a motif for his work, he cooperates with animation artists from the University. Max Hattler succeeds in building a bridge to Great Britain by incorporating the music of Jean-Gabriel Becker aka Lux Prima (“Divisional Articulations” and “Matter and Motion”).
