Abstract
The calligraphy exhibition, “The Rapport in Calligraphy: Ancient Classics and Cultural Exchange”, organised by the Calligraphy Connections Project of City University of Hong Kong (CityU) and Korean Cultural Center in Hong Kong (KCC) displays nearly fifty calligraphy artworks created by prestigious Korean and Chinese academicians as well as students.
These artworks were extracted from Siku Quanshu (四庫全書) and The Collection of Korean Anthologies (韓國歷代文集叢書). The exhibition aims to facilitate the academic exchange of literature through calligraphy. Consul General Baek Yong-chun (from Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Hong Kong), Academician King Yeo-chi, Director Lee Young Ho (from KCC), Consul Lee Hwa Bin (from the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Hong Kong) and a number of guests attended the guided tour hosted by the CityU student curators (Li Jingyan, Richard Wong and Zou Huiqi) and carried out calligraphy exchanges on July 17th. Consul General Baek Yong-chun wrote Farewell to Officer Du Leaving for His Post in Shu (Sichuan), authored by Wang Bo. Academician King Yeo-chi also wrote On A Rainy Autumn Night, authored by Choe Chi Won.
The guided tour showed the beauty of traditional Chinese and Korean culture along with calligraphy in six different ways. CityU students introduced the exhibits. Ms. Hyun Ju Lee (from UOW College Hong Kong) recited Chinese poems in Hanja. Dr. Jennifer Cheung (Court Member, CityU), Professor Liu Meichun and Prof Kit Chun Yu (Department of Linguistics and Translation, CityU) recited the echo poems (with the same rhyme) of Sunset at a Fishing Village, one of the Eight Views of the Xiao and Xiang Rivers, authored by Yi Je-hyeon.
The winners of the JC Poetic Heritage Awards 2021 recited the English translation of the poem. The JC Poetic Heritage Awards was established by Dr. Jennifer Cheung Ng Chui Yiu to promote cultural exchanges beyond boundaries through the translation of classical East Asian poems. The visually impaired student (Sharon Choi) and her supporting buddy (Joey Lam) showed how to appreciate calligraphy artworks by touching and listening. Guests and visitors watched the documentary "Korean Classics Alive in Hong Kong – Choe Chi-won" shot by CityU students.
