Abstract

To the average construction project manager, making the construction site safer for construction workers is a continuing problem. However, need we pause to ask a seemingly silly question, “Of what use is it to make the construction site safer for the construction worker?” This apparently silly question is indeed very pertinent when the site manager is under pressure to reduce waste, increase production, expedite schedule, reduce cost and improve quality. Through system dynamic simulation of workers quality of work life on construction sites, we explore the value of safer construction to the worker and the site manager. Data from construction site in Thailand is used to explore policy options available to the construction project manager with the view of determining the optimum value of safety on construction sites. We then offer advice to construction project managers in a developing country setting on how to balance safety and the quality of work-life for the worker.
