Abstract

Enrolling older adults in a volunteer team is supposedly a way to increase the adults' commitment to volunteering. Showing such an increase requires the illustration of the mediating mechanism and controlling for the propensity to join a volunteer team. A plausible mediating process is through social workers' induction into volunteering. Examination of such a mediating model employed survey data from 372 volunteer team members, 347 senior center members who were not volunteer team members, and 265 nonmembers in Hong Kong. Findings support the mediating model, with the control for the propensities to join a volunteer team, join a senior center, and remain as a nonmember. Moreover, findings indicate that the contributions of volunteer team membership and social work induction to volunteer commitment were stronger than were those of senior center membership and peer induction respectively. These findings support the social integration model of volunteering.
