Abstract

The pumping process and the application of an external electromagnetic field can alter the temperature of fresh concrete, potentially influencing the magneto-rheological (MR) response of cementitious materials. This study examines the impact of ambient temperature varying from 10℃ to 40℃ on the magneto-responsive structural evolution of cementitious paste with magnetic nano-Fe3O4 particles (MNPs). The experimental results reveal that in the absence of a magnetic field, the shear stress increases with rising temperature. The viscoelastic yield stress, measured from small amplitude oscillatory strain sweep test, remains unchanged up to 30℃ but increases significantly at temperatures above 30℃. Upon application of a 0.5 T magnetic field, the cement paste demonstrates enhanced fluid characteristics, whereas elevated temperature promotes faster evolution from viscous to elastic-dominated behavior. The MR response of the cementitious paste shows less change at ambient temperatures between 20℃ and 25℃, with variations within 1.5 %, but drops significantly when the temperature falls below 20℃ (by 4 %-8 %) or exceeds 30℃ (by 25 %-47 %). By analyzing the effect of temperature on cement hydration kinetics, thermodynamic forces, and magnetic properties of Fe3O4 particles, it is suggested that temperature primarily influences the MR response by affecting the hydration rate of the cement paste.
