Abstract
Concerned with general processes operating in the housing market, and the implications of these processes for understanding current inner city debates. Reviews theoretical approaches to the inner city problem and the housing question; current trends in British housing; and selects 3 key issues for housing policy - 'commodification', decay and modernization, and the nature of state intervention. The conclusion relates the overall analysis to the understanding of the inner city debate, and argues that deprivation is structural rather than tenure- or area-specific. Some new directions for housing research area also considered. -after Authors
