Household Socioeconomic Status Influences the Indoor Environments Affecting Chinese Children's Respiratory and Allergy Health

The indoor environmental health studies have long recognized the crucial role of housing in determining population health, especially concerning children's respiratory and allergic diseases (RADs). Despite identifying multiple risk factors, there is limited understanding of the causes of these risk factors and potential practical interventions associated with them. This study presents a two-level analysis to address this issue from the household socioeconomic status (SES) perspective. Firstly, we comprehensively analyzed a wide range of indoor risk factors in a Chinese city. Secondly, we investigated the relationship between SES variables and the identified risk factors. These variables include family Hukou, a household registration system used in China that can impact the acquisition of social resources, and parental education. The multivariable analyses identified several environmental and lifestyle-related factors significantly associated with children’s RADs. Furthermore, most risk factors are modifiable and significantly associated with higher household SES, which could provide new insights into effective intervention strategies. © 2024 18th Conference of the International Society of Indoor Air Quality and Climate, INDOOR AIR 2024 - Conference Program and Proceedings.
