Abstract
Redevelopment, housing and environmental problems are the common social problems shared by Asian cities. A large number of social problems are rooted in the fight of land resource and the paucity of space. Most of the videos in this program address the major concern of the characteristics, changes and disappearing of space. Views of the artists are shown through the view of the city. Howard Cheng’s “SEESAW” simply changed the rhythm of the escalators and portrayed poetic moving images. Ding Cheuk Laam tried to walk slowly and read a poem inside busy MTR (subway) which too was a poetic act. Don Tsang used video editing to connect the different disconnected levels of a high rise building. All these works offer a new visual experience of the city. Linda Lai has depicted the disappearing places of Hong Kong and Macau. The “mistakes” of images and sounds of the cities are rich in texture and form. The “misinterpretation” of the visual elements of Kowloon by the video game in Ip Yuk Yiu’s work also represents a new way of imagining the city. He made the gun in the video game disappear, so as to unleash another way of reading of the video game. Zheng Bo’s work makes an invisible community appear in Hong Kong. He invited a group of Filipinos to sing an old popular Filipino song, “O Ilaw” (Oh Light) and made a Karaoke video device in public space. The audience can follow the Karaoke video to sing the song. This work made people more aware of the culture of this community in Hong Kong. Many families have Filipino domestic helpers but they do not know the culture of the helpers at all. Phoebe Man also used socially engaged art to gather views of people from Asian countries that include Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong and many other countries on the issue of “comfort women”. Their views were lined up to make a heart beating animation, to urge the government of Japan to face the issue of violation of human rights. These works reflects the “View of Asia” through a more personal point of view or a more proactive socially engaged practice, showing not only the material surface of the city but also the inner heart of it.
